Commander's Corner
Dave Rice

It’s hard to believe I’ve been in office two months already, time goes by quickly and a lot of ground has been covered since our last Legionnaire was published. I think one of the best parts of this job is that I have had the privilege to meet and talk to many of you that I didn’t know before. And, I sure have learned a lot about our organization. Thanks again to all of you who are helping me out, I appreciate it.

We have made some major changes in our club operation. Our lounge is once again under Legion management and we have just hired Mona Arnold as our Club Manager. I hope you will stop down to the club and welcome Mona to our Legion team.

Our Post needed to take out a mortgage loan to meet our current commitments. We paid off our remodeling bills and other debts. Our obvious goal is to turn a profit. We will not do so without your support. I’m asking for two things: first, periodically use our bar and restaurant; second, market our facilities to your friends and colleagues. Area hotels and other establishments are heavily booked with Christmas parties, for example. We have excellent facilities to host those types of events, but we have very few of them booked. Please help us spread the word about our facilities, we would certainly welcome the business. Thank you.

Dave Rice, Commander

Auxiliary President's Message
Barb Nash

Greetings to all!

Wow – summer is drawing to a close! There are far too few summer months. Here’s to a long, warm fall with bountiful fruits of our labor! Me – I’ll be at the Farmer’s Market enjoying someone else’s bountiful labor…

The Board will be meeting on August 29th to discuss our plans for the upcoming year. Our September meeting will be held on the 13th. Please plan to attend, as we will be hosting our Girls State attendees and the Post Commander, Dave Rice. One of our Girls State sponsorees, Rachel Overboe, was elected Girls State Governor! Commander Rice will talk about his goals for the Post for the upcoming year. You will also get a chance to see what construction improvements have been happening at the Club! It is looking truly awesome! The woodwork and lighting are beautiful.

Fargo is hosting the Fall District 1 Meeting on September 23, 2005, at 7:30, with dinner before that. Our very own, Past President LaVonne Matthews, was nominated/elected District Vice President. Plan to attend and give all the attendees a warm Fargo welcome as well as support to LaVonne, and District 1 Commander, Ralph Hoff.

Our Music Camp attendees will be playing at our October meeting on the 11th. Mark that on your calendars too.

For those of you who are internet-savvy, I encourage you to check out the Fargo Legion web page at http://www.tristateveterans.com/fargolegion. You will also find links to other Veteran-related sites. You may also chose to have this newsletter electronically delivered to your e-mail address – this helps cut copying and mailing expenses!

While there is always a push to recruit new members, we must take the time to remember our more-tenured members and all the fine work they have done over the years. This year we are going to make every effort to recognize our 50+ year members. How we are going to do accomplish this has yet to be decided. I would envision some sort of certificate ceremony and dessert, in a non-winter month, wherein the recipients do nothing except attend! I would appreciate any ideas or comments.

Finally, a quote I found in a completely different newsletter: “Man’s mind stretched to a new idea never goes back to its original dimensions.” Oliver W. Holmes. I’ll see you on September 13th.

Barb Nash, Auxiliary President, Unit #2

Message from the Chef de Gare
Larry Lein

Greetings fellow Voyageurs

It just seems like I wrote my letter for the summer months and here it is September already. Where did the summer go? Hope all of you had a very good summer, once we got to it.

I would like to thank all of those that came down for our Monday night spaghetti feed. The numbers have been up and the spaghetti is good, so thank you again.

With summer coming to a close it is time to get back into the flow again with our monthly promenades and working on our programs as well as membership. If any of you out there have some ideas of how to increase our membership or our attendance at Promenades, give me a call or a letter or a note. I am open to all ideas. Let’s see if we can get our Voiture back on track and have fun doing all that we do.

Our first Promenade of this new year will be Tuesday September 27th and the fourth Tuesday of each month there after till June. Hope to see a good turn out in September.

Larry Lein, Chef de Gare

The Capital Campaign

The Capital Campaign is moving into its next phase. The initial committee currently is being expanded and changed. The new members from among the membership are being asked to give up a minimal amount of their time. Through their position in the community they have the ability to meet with the decision makers from the business community. Their duty is simple. All they have to do is make an introduction for someone to meet with them to explain the capital campaign program. If anyone is interested in serving on the committee they should contact the Post #2 office or call Keith Kerbaugh at 866-6700.

Keith Kerbaugh, Capital Campaign Chairman
